Re “Unconstitutional” (Your Views, Feb. 12): I have to rebut what Melinda Himmler defined as constitutional and what is not. She states that Lucy van Tine’s definition of the First Amendment is unconstitutional and that van Tine should read the Constitution. In fact, it is Himmler who should read it.

The First Amendment gives us all the freedom of speech and peaceful, lawful assembly. That is a foundation of democracy.

Twisting this right of free speech into an excuse to first incite then participate in violence that results in damage to property, as well as injury and even the death of people whose views are different from one’s own is not covered by the First Amendment.

Our presidential election, indeed any political election is one of our treasured rights of democracy. President Joe Biden won the election with the popular vote and the Electoral College. The counting of the electoral votes was overseen by both Republicans and Democrats, objections were overruled by judges in every level, including the Supreme Court, and the results were certified as legally right and binding. It was democracy in action despite the anarchy and attempted overthrow of our government by rabid right-wing terrorists.

So the question is do you want to use our First Amendment rights to protect democracy or to attack it? When you use it to attack democracy that is obviously not what the Founding Fathers intended and tells us that folks who believe otherwise need to actually read the Constitution itself to become enlightened as to its true meaning.

Death penalty

If there is a question of innocence for a death row inmate, DNA should be utilized. Our technology has vastly improved over the decades and may actually prove innocence for some who were wrongly convicted or solidify their current conviction.

However, I constantly think about an awful 2000 murder in Newport News. Beulah Mae Kaiser was a 79-year-old widow who volunteered at a local rescue mission. The men, who lived across the hall from her, Kent Jackson and Marc Dorsett, chose to kill Kaiser in the most horrific, heinous and brutal way imaginable. The pair ransacked her apartment and robbed her before killing her.

Jackson was executed by lethal injection on July 10, 2008.

Kaiser wasn’t fortunate enough to die in such a painless and peaceful manner.

Please. Keep the death penalty.

Losing hope

As a 77-year-old who has registered about 10 times with the Peninsula Health District and tried multiple times to get an appointment with a drugstore, enough is enough. As a Social Security and Medicare beneficiary, I have to think, what will it take to get vaccinated?
