Kafel said testimony from six officers — some active, some retired — was heard at the hearing. One of them was retired county Sheriff Tom Bosenko. Kafel said Bosenko was the one who found the alleged murder weapon, a knife, as part of a dive team searching the Sacramento River.
Police shared both older and newer photos of James Watkins, of Texas, who they believe killed Christine Susan Munro in 1995. (Photo: Redding Police Department)
Also providing testimony was Detective Rusty Bishop. When announcing Watkins’ arrest in November, Redding’s police chief credited Bishop for submitting Munro’s fingernail scrapings for forensic analysis.
Kafel said the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a database of genetic profiles on a large number of criminal offenders, matched the DNA under her fingernails to Watkins.
Kafel said the preliminary hearing went as planned and thanked police for preserving the necessary evidence. She declined to say whether the DA’s office has offered Watkins a plea deal.
Kafel said she’ll be back in court April 19 to schedule potential trial dates. The public defender representing Watkins, Jonathon Villavicencio, declined to comment for this article.
