Ballet Memphis created a movie version of “The Nutcracker” this year. Memphis Commercial Appeal
The physical traumas and artistic epiphanies that coalesce within a year’s worth of dance creation are chronicled with fly-on-the-wall (or fly-on-the-barre) access in “A Ballet Season,” a documentary about Ballet Memphis that debuts Friday on WKNO-TV, Channel 10.
Filled with dance, drama and damaged body parts, the film reveals that orthopedics is in some ways as crucial as choreography to the ballet company’s success.
“My thoracic cervical junction is very tight, so possibly my spine is jammed,” says dancer Pablo Sanchez, after a visit to Dr. Santos Martinez. “I mean, we are athletes,” affirms dancer Virginia Pilgrim Ramey. “I think sometimes people don’t realize how physically demanding what we do is.” ANDIEZ Live Like Someone Left The Gate Open Sheep Poster

At the same time, ballet production is shown to be conceptual as well as physical.
According to costume designer Bruce Bui, a dress patterned with squares that suggest a mosaic of old photographs is intended evoke an “ethereal idea of memories floating”; meanwhile, choreographer Alia Kache encourages her dancers to combine classical training with “spirally gooeyness.”
Filmed in 2018 and 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic hobbled live public arts performances with the sledgehammer mercilessness of Annie Wilkes, “A Ballet Season” airs at 8 p.M. Friday and at 4 p.M. Sunday on WKNO. Directed by University of Memphis colleagues Steven John Ross and David Goodman, the 86-minute film will be followed by new interviews and ballet updates to fill out each broadcast’s two-hour time slot.
