Starting an independent business from scratch is no small feat—so why would anyone give up a concept built from their blood, sweat and tears to convert to a franchise? Jon and Kari Murdock asked themselves that same question when considering whether or not to convert their Murdock Plumbing business in the valley of Kalispell, Montana, to a Mr. Rooter Plumbing, a Neighborly company. Neighborly has 28 service-based franchise brands with more than 4,500 franchises in nine countries.

“We put so much time and energy into building our business and helping to make our name known in the valley as being a reliable, honest, quality plumbing business. We did not want to lose that,” Kari said. “Jon also had a lot of pride in the fact that it was our name on the door and that meant a lot to him. We talked to the Mr. Rooter Plumbing representative quite a bit about how much say we would still have in the day-to-day operations of our business.”  ANDIEZ Yoga Namastay High Af Poster

Jon began his career as a deputy sheriff, but always wanted to have his own business. Inspired by his father, who started a garage door business, Jon liked the idea of helping support people in their community, so they started Murdock Plumbing as soon as Jon had his master’s license in plumbing in August 2015.

A few years later, the couple was contacted by Mr. Rooter Plumbing, which ranks No. 193 on our Top 200+ franchise list, to see if they were interested in hearing about a new company that wanted to move into the valley. Intrigued, they started looking into other plumbing franchises. “Mr. Rooter Plumbing had a core set of values that really aligned with our personal values,” Jon said.

Kari, who was born and raised in Kalispell and worked as an elementary school teacher for 18 years, felt it was important for community members to recognize their business is owned and operated by locals. They also wanted to be able to continue supporting their schools and local causes. “When we realized we did not have to lose any of that in order to change our name, we felt much more comfortable making that change,” she said.

They opened their Mr. Rooter franchise on June 1, 2020. The investment to open a Mr. Rooter location ranges from $79,975 to $187,140, and there are more than 200 units open in the U.S.

“The transition was a little overwhelming at first and there was a steep learning curve. We had to learn a new invoicing and scheduling system in the office,” Kari said, while her husband Jon and their other hired plumbers learned a new system and began using iPads to document everything while on a job.
