The next generation of the artist, the Realists (see Chapter 18), tried to attract the middle and upper classes to the struggles of the poor (factory workers and peasants) by showing off they are honest and gentle. The invention of oil-painted tubes in 1841 made it possible for artists to paint outdoors, capturing workers’ images on canvas while they were working. Their staggering brush strokes (you have to draw quickly if you want to capture the fleeting moment) make their work appear fuzzy, a little fluff.
