MINZY Easily Distracted by Skulls and Guitar Poster
According to Wil, Keith is the brains of the operation, Wil brings the fingers. The idea was to take the music to the people by playing on the front porch because after all, sooner or later, Rover needs to go for a walk.
In those first frightful weeks of the lockdown, nobody knew what to expect about anything. The idea of playing live concerts on the porch was a short-term idea.
Weather, audience reaction and people with other things on their minds pointed to “Walking The Dog” shows being a one-off, or maybe two or three weeks at best.
As we would find out in new and interesting ways, people turned to music during the lockdown for a sense of normality, a sense of calm if even for a few minutes. The audience began to grow in socially distant approved ways, like online with the help of Keith (remember, the brains of the operation) and live weekly Facebook streams.
The in-person audience has grown, too, with Wil’s most loyal fans, his aunt and uncle (the Vaughans), who have been there every week in person. When the weather is nice, and with masks and appropriate distancing, a few people set up lawn chairs and enjoy live, outdoor music.
But what will the neighbors say? According to Wil, they are “all on board, too. They sit outside and watch, and the guy across the street even built a makeshift fire pit to help warm things up after dark.” MINZY Easily Distracted by Skulls and Guitar Poster
With nice weather and people outdoors, the in-person audience on some nights was upwards of 30 viewers. Local TV stations have run stories.
True to the Kondrich way, they have used the platform to raise money for local non-profits like Band Together Pittsburgh, the local Eagle Scouts, and for PPE equipment for first responders.
What started as a throw-it-at-the-wall idea on the front porch has become a weekly ritual for the entire Kondrich family proper, as well as a socially distant family of fans. And they are about to celebrate their first anniversary together on, appropriately, March 17, St. Patrick’s Day.
Each Wednesday, the Kondrich family gathers for a pre-show dinner, complete with a featured “drink of the week.” For the foreseeable future, Wil plans to keep entertaining anyone walking their dog.
“To me, things are always looking up. I just try to enjoy the hell out of everything,” he said.
He looks forward to being able to play live gigs with his bands the Cheerl’y Men and Cash 4 Life, and working on his solo material. Kondrich’s range goes from electric to acoustic, and he can do classic rock, rock, blues and soul and prefers to write in the alt-country vein.
