When we moved from the old building to the new, the changes were outstanding. The old building smelled of ink in the air from the presses. There were also the loud noises of the presses running, printing the afternoon papers. We switched to morning papers later, and the presses then ran overnight, when the news people weren’t there. We also switched from the old typewriters to computers, which was a huge jump and much quieter.
Reporting the news has changed, also. In the old days, we’d be out in the city and county, interviewing, taking photos, getting the news firsthand, then taking it back to the office to write. These days, there are few people in the building, as everyone writes from home. The new building is mostly empty now, and will soon be turned into the city library. The Tribune will move to a smaller office building.
There were difficult times, I admit. Death threats because some people hated a story. At times, police included our house in their nightly patrols. A city leader who, every time he came by the Tribune, would ask the editor if they’d fired Mike Peters yet. Folks who wrote angry letters full of words that couldn’t be printed.
But I also had the pleasure of covering Greeley and its good people. Folks who turn out en masse to put wreaths on veterans’ graves at People who feed the poor and help the homeless and stop to help someone who has fallen. Good citizens who volunteer to make sure others can make it through the difficult times we’re having now.
Yes, there are some great memories of Greeley and its newspaper. Things are difficult now, because newspapers are losing readers. Newspapers are mostly digital now, and many folks try to get their news from Facebook and other personal media. Personalized I Love You More The End I Win Irish Mug
But I still look forward to holding that morning paper while enjoying my coffee.
— Mike Peters is was a longtime reporter for the Tribune. He currently writes the “Gnarly Trombone” and “100 Years Ago” columns for the newspaper.
