“The night we lost Max started out like any other Monday and finished in a way that’s now burned into the core of everyone in the family,” Nick Easey said.

“It was the most all-consuming set of emotions anyone can ever experience and created so many unanswerable questions that to this day haunt us all. Being given the news your son has died, and in such circumstances, is just totally incomprehensible and something nothing can prepare you for, it’s total numbness.

“Since that night three years ago, every day has been a learning curve. Things you once took for granted like locations, smells and music, will trigger unexpected memories of Max that knock you for six. Time helps you understand these things but even now something will catch you off guard and the whole event unfolds in your head over again.

“The traditional family times like Christmas and birthdays have been particularly hard and we still feel our way through them, remembering Max in our own special ways with little rituals starting to become the norm, for example launching a rocket or balloons, as they in some way help. Life will never be the same for any of us, it can’t be, but trying to make a positive from all the grief has led us to being far more aware of how we feel emotionally and to be able to articulate those feelings with each other.”

Mr Easey explained how his son’s sad death has created a legacy in that his story has travelled the globe, via mainstream and social media. There have been charity sports matches, parachute jumps and endurance walks in his memory to remember him and raise funds to help other young men and women. He said: “ Max’s story has resonated strongly with the sporting community as he was seen as such a strong and happy lad and really broke the stereotypical mould of what depression and suicidal thoughts look like in a person. It’s still incredibly hard to talk about what happened, but it’s a moral duty to try and help prevent another family having to endure such a tragic, needless loss. The advice is simple to give, but still far too hard to do for some, and that’s talk. Tell someone how you feel, don’t ever give up and remember that feeling will pass and that you are absolutely someone’s everything.
