Art clearly reverses with the outbreak of Christianity in the final period of the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, art and architecture had a sacred mission: to direct man’s attention to God. The church rises high in that direction, and sculptures and paintings point the way to heaven. They describe the suffering of Christ, the apostles, the martyrs, the day of the Last Judgment. . . Hence they tend to represent people more symbolically than reality (see Chapter 10).
