Senenmut’s Temple (Temple 16) is located on a high cliff and faces East, towards the Nile. It was almost certainly designed to be accessible from the river at a time of high water. The temple consists of a framed doorway, cut into the sandstone cliff, leading into a square room with a seated statue of Senenmut, cut from living rock. These are now badly damaged, although the flat ceiling still has traces of its original colorful pattern. Although most of the Gebel Silsila temples have a fairly consistent emphasis on burial in their text and setting, Senenmut’s temple omits the familiar mundane funeral feasts in favor of depicts Hatchepsut being embraced by the crocodile-headed god Sobek and Nekhbet, the vulture goddess of Upper Egypt. As other commentators have observed, ‘Senenmut’s special status and his relationship with the monarch certainly account for these unusual features
