Joe was a force outside of the tribe, too. California Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, D-Coachella, called him a “great leader” and an “example to follow” in a January state Assembly session. Joe even taught Garcia a few Cahuilla words. You Mess with The Meow Meow You Get The Peow Peow Shirt

“Chairman Benitez was the spiritual elder of the tribe, the one person that, as young people, we would go to and hear about stories from the past,” he said during the session.

Up until the pandemic, Joe, in his 80s, was still the portrait of a man about town. He was active in the church choir, and went to meetings, committees and coffee dates with family and friends. Then “the world stopped,” Trayci said.

In December, her parents tested positive — her dad first, her mom, Diana, second.

Trayci lives elsewhere in California, but she quickly drove over to help, despite her parents’ initial claims that they were fine. While her mom eventually recovered with lingering symptoms, by then Joe was at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage for the second time.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, their family dealt with the flurry of constantly changing complications that often come with COVID-19. As Trayci describes it, if it wasn’t one thing, it was another: When her dad’s blood pressure seemed to even out, there was a heart rhythm problem. If it wasn’t his heart rhythm, it was delirium. “It was bad,” she said. “They were constantly trying to stabilize things.”

On Dec. 23, hospital staff seemed fairly optimistic. Dad’s not going to be home for Christmas Eve, Trayci thought, but maybe he’ll make it for Christmas. Within 24 hours, that thought was dashed. Staff relayed, unexpectedly, that Joe had suffered a stroke. They started suggesting different comfort care options.
